Rescue Box 505
Monday, July 5, 2021
Shortly after midnight on July 5th while most were sleeping, Charlestown Boat 5 with a crew of 4 responded for a mutual aid request from Harford County to assist in finding and rescuing of a vessel with 5 souls and 1 dog on board hard aground and taking on water
The vessel had been enjoying the fireworks display at the nearby City of Havre De Grace and on their trip back to Charlestown suffered a navigation equipment failure which resulted in their grounding and propulsion failure that resulted in them taking on water inside the cabin.
At first, it was indicated that the vessel was located in the area of Sand and Battery Islands on the Susquehanna River, but after conversing with both Harford command and DNR it was discovered that the vessel was located closer to Carpenters Point and more to the center of the Susquehanna Flats in an extremely inaccessible area.
2 inflatables from Harford TRT team and 1 DNR vessel managed to drive, walk and paddle their way over to and safely remove all the occupants and bring them to Boat 5 for a mode of safe transport back to a marina in Charlestown.
This was a team effort including 7 boats 1 helicopter and 2 drones (only 1 was used).
Many thanks to all involved including Susquehanna Hose Company, Harford TRT team, Harford County Sheriff's Office, MD State Police Aviation, USCG, and Perry Point Veterans Administration Fire Department.
Boat 5 returned to dock shortly after 4 am after dropping off those rescued.
